Derek Saunier

You as a player: Derek Saunier played 4 years for me at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, a NCAA DII program competing in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. As a freshman, our coaching staff had a difficult time deciding on a field position for Derek. He was highly recruited to be a defender for us, but we were returning a strong back line his freshman year. However, we felt he needed to be on the field. So, he played several positions for UCCS in the 2013 season. In 2014, Derek solidified himself as our starting Center Back and maintained that position through his 2016 senior season.
Derek is one of the most athletic and reliable defenders that I have worked with. His speed, physicality, and ability to read his opponent makes him excel in 1v1 defensive situations. He also carries a high soccer IQ with the ability adjust within different systems of play. He picks the short and long pass accurately and effectively when in possession. And again, Derek is reliable. He carries and conducts himself in a professional manner, showing to each training session and game ready to compete at a high level. Derek was an integral part of our success of the last several seasons and will be very difficult to replace. I believe he will continue this trend as a professional player.
